Exploring New Worlds in Space

Space Shuttle Throw Contest-There will be a contest to see whose shuttle will fly the furthest.  The space shuttles can be made at home or in class. Each class should determine a first and second place winner.  The class winners will complete in a school wide competition.  Your shuttle should be completed by March 8th in order to participate in classroom competitions.  We will have the final contest on either March 9th or 10th.  I will let you know the times for the final competition as soon as possible.  The following rules must apply to your shuttle:

1.  Shuttles must be made of 1-3 pieces of 8.5 x 11 sheets of standard paper.

2. Tape and glue are allowed.

3. Three staples may be used.

4.  All shuttles must carry a payload of one U.S. penny, and the penny must stay on during the flight.

5. Each contestant may only enter one shuttle.

6. Each contestant will throw their own plane and be allowed only two throws.  It would be a good idea to practice throwing your shuttle before the competition.

7.  All entries must be hand made.  No commercially designed shuttles will be allowed.

8.  If a group enters a shuttle, one person must be chosen from the group to throw the shuttle.

This year we are adding an Egg Drop to the Space Week activities.  We will toss the eggs in their protective containers from the school roof to see whose egg survives. Teachers, please let me know how many of your students will be submitting an entry byThursday, March 9th.  I will purchase the eggs.  Only the students with an entry may attend the egg drop which will held Friday, March 10th. Once again, the exact times will be given at a later date.  Let your imagination and ingenuity be your guide.  Here is a list of suggested materials: sponges, cotton, toilet paper, tape, straws, cardboard, paper bags, socks, glue, plastic bags, and material scraps.  Glass and metal (or anything that will shatter) cannot be used for safety reasons!!!  Finally, the weight of the container should not exceed 3 pounds.
